Have Most Recent Wireless iPod Docking Stations Improved?

By Helen Schneider

There is a wide range of iPod products available nowadays. I am going to provide several pointers to help you whilst shopping for amphony.com iPod docking stations to stay away from any unpleasant surprises.

Running the cords to install a new set of speakers is often a hassle. If your house is not prewired for audio you may end up drilling holes and doing a full-scale cabling project. Wireless iPod docks promise to eradicate the loudspeaker wires. Cordless loudspeakers need power to drive the loudspeaker elements and usually come with a power cable which needs to be plugged into an outlet. To get rid of the power cord, various cordless speakers have rechargeable batteries in order to power the internal amplifier that permits them to be located practically anywhere. Speakers with moderate audio power, however, require quite heavy batteries that makes logging the loudspeakers to a place where the batteries may be recharged fairly of a hassle. In addition batteries will age over time and have to be replaced.

Be confident to select a loudspeaker that provides ample audio power for yor application. If you are planning to set up your loudspeakers in your kitchen or bed room, you can select a reasonably low-powered loudspeaker. Then again, if you are planning to install cordless loudspeakers outdoors or in your home theater, you may want to take a look at moderate to high output power loudspeakers. Depending on whether you are planning to employ the loudspeaker indoors or outdoors, you may want to go with a loudspeaker that is waterproof or at the very least rain resistant.

Next, be sure that the transmitter unit can connect to the source audio that you want to drive your speakers with. Clearly the more audio inputs the transmitter has the better. If you want to connect your transmitter to your surround system, you might need loudspeaker terminal inputs unless your surround equipment provides line level audio for your rear loudspeakers. A number of more sophisticated transmitters also come with an iPod cradle. This cradle permits streaming of music straight from an iPod or iPhone and also acts as a recharger base. However, if you own a different MP3 player, you can still stream your music through attaching to the transmitter through a standard line audio input which nearly every transmitter has. Several transmitters offer an audio input with a volume control. This enables the transmitter to adjust to nearly any audio device, regardless of the audio output level.

Whilst historically wireless models would make use of analog audio transmission, generally at 900 MHz, the newest generation uses digital audio transmission at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz and eradicate audio distortion and noise. Another benefit of digital transmission is the superior robustness against interference from other transmitters like cordless telephones which is vital with the ever growing number of wireless gadgets these days.

If possible, try to arrange a listening test. Be aware though that the sound quality also depends on your listening surroundings. Several cordless iPod docks have adjustable trebble or base. On the other hand, rather than buying a new pair of loudspeakers, one more option is to go with a cordless loudspeaker kit and make your old loudspeakers cordless by attaching a cordless receiver unit to each speaker.
