A Computer Virus is an unwanted self-replicating program that infects your computer without you knowing it. There are thousands of viruses luring around the internet at present which may enter your computer anytime it finds an opportunity to exploit. Anything that is unwanted should be removed, quarantined and deleted from your machine's memory. Viruses are not only unwanted, they are also harmful and destructive. How will you remove one that is already on your computer's hard drive? A thorough knowledge of "how to" can save you a lot of money in repairs!

Stay away and beware of harmful programs

Viruses only wait for a security breach on your computer for them to enter and start destroying your machine. Preventing this devils from entering your computer is the best way of preserving your machine's performance both hardware and software wise. Installing virus protection programs is one way of prevention and as well as performing a regular system maintenance check. An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure!

Ways to Remove Computer Viruses

System Restore

Windows operating systems like XP, Vista and Windows 7 are designed to have a System restore tool which is very useful once your computer becomes infected by a virus at one point. This tool works by restoring an earlier image of your operating system. This is done by turning on your machine and booting on the system restore option. Your system will be automatically restored to the state before it was infected by the virus. Once the restore process is done make sure to perform a wide scan on your memory and remove all detected viruses.

Registry Repair

There are also instances that a virus attacks your computer's registry making your computer slow and hang most of the time. A simple way to remove the virus that causes this is by downloading free registry repair software or just letting windows do the process. After the registry repair, do the wide scan and remove all detected viruses.

Antivirus Software

Viruses can also be removed using your antivirus software. Antivirus software that are regularly updated to the latest virus definitions should detect threats automatically and move them to a place where they can't infect and destroy other files. Once alerted by your antivirus software that a threat has been detected, all you have to do is to access the quarantine folder and delete the viruses within the folder. A wide system scan using your antivirus software also helps detect and quarantine other types of malicious softwares on your system.

Doing the last way: Reformat

Reformatting your hard drive is the last resort you can use if you really want to restore your computer to its previous fast performance. Before doing this step, it is advised that you set up a back-up partition first to preserve the important files you can't afford of losing. Once the partition containing your valuable files has been set up, you're now ready to reformat the other partition containing your operating system. Reinstalling your version of windows is done using your installation CD which came with your computer when you bought it.
