Epson Artisan 837 Assessments

By Emma Crispin

Like the Artisan 835, the Artisan 837 provides such office-centric functions as each a flatbed and a 30-page automatic document feeder to handle stacks of letter- and legal-size pages. It can print, scan, and fax, even more than a network; work as a standalone copier and fax machine; and connect by Ethernet or WiFi for simple sharing.

The Artisan 837 also scored reasonably nicely on photo speed, although it wasn't as impressive for pictures as for buisiness applications. I timed it at an typical of 58 seconds to get a 4 by 6, basically tied using the 835 (one second off in this case). The much much less expensive Kodak ESP 5250 All-In-One Printer ($149.99 direct, 3.5 stars) took just 36 seconds on our tests.

Output High quality and other Issues

The Artisan 837 also follows in the footsteps of the Artisan 835 for output quality, scoring a touch below par general. Text is good sufficient for many purposes where you don't need to create a great impression. In our tests, edges weren't as crisp as with most inkjets and also the characters themselves were a bit gray. If you have any expertise with fabric ribbons on typewriters (Remember typewriters?), image a page typed with a ribbon that requirements altering.

Graphics were easily good sufficient for any internal company require and for most house printing, but colors were a little dull instead of vibrant. Photos were uneven. The majority of our test pictures were better than you may expect from your nearby drugstore, but a black and white photo showed an annoyingly apparent tint, and one color photo was badly oversaturated. How much of a problem this really is will depend on whether you print black and white photos and whether or not you mind getting an occasional poor result.

Even though the epson artisan 837 suffers from numerous essential limitations, such as the 120-sheet input capacity and also the below par output high quality, the limitations are greater than balanced by a minimum of as numerous strong points, such as the built in duplexer, the photo tray, the ADF, and quick speed. Ultimately, if you're searching for a printer that can serve the dual role of house and light duty home workplace printer, these balancing strong points are easily sufficient to create the Artisan 837 nicely worth thinking about.

Paper-handling functions for the Artisan 837 are extremely good. It pairs a bottom-mounted, 120-sheet paper tray with an automatic duplexer. Sitting inside the main paper tray is a devoted, 20-sheet photo-paper tray that accepts media up to 5 by 7 inches in size. The Artisan 837 also handles printable optical media: Touch the CD Tray button, and about 15 seconds later a tray appears, exactly where you can place your CD or DVD. Epson consists of a separate application for designing the labels.
